Wireless Auto Configuration, available in Windows XP and Windows Server 2003, dynamically selects the wireless network to which to attempt connection, based either on your preferences or on default settings. This includes automatically selecting and connecting to a more preferred wireless network when it becomes available. If none of the preferred wireless networks are found nearby, Wireless Auto Configuration configures the wireless adapter so that there is no accidental connection until the wireless client roams within the range of a preferred network.
Outlined below are two ways to disable wireless zero configuration (WZC) in Windows XP. This is sometimes needed to prevent WZC from connecting to other wireless networks or stations when you are already connected to the desired wireless connection.
Command Line
- OFF – Start -> Run (or Windows key+R) then type net stop wzcsvc
- ON – Start -> Run (or Windows key+R) then type net start wzcsvc
Graphical User Interface (GUI)
- Start -> Run (or Windows key+R)
- Type in services.msc then Click the OK button
- Scroll down towards bottom of list and select Wireless Zero Configuration
- Select Action -> Properties from menu.
You now have the option to Start/Stop service.
You can also change the Startup Type from Automatic to Manual.
- Click OK to apply settings
